Principal's Message

Message for December - 2015

To all our Hualapai Families,

On November 30th we sent home the results of the new state assessment, AzMerit, that 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders took last spring for the 2014/15 school year.  The AzMerit assesses your student’s abilities on the new Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards in Math and in English-Language Arts (ELA).  It replaced the old AIMS test that many of you were already familiar with.

If your child took both assessments, you should then have received two documents (one for math and one for ELA).  On one side it shows how your child scored on the test and which category he or she achieved.  Depending on the total score, students fell into one of four categories (Minimally Proficient, Partially Proficient, Proficient, or Highly Proficient).  In layman’s terms, students passed the test if they scored in the “Proficient” range or higher.  On the other side of the document are some explanations of what the scores mean and a summary of how the student did on various standards of the assessment.

If you compare your child’s AzMerit Scores with their AIMS scores from previous years, you may notice that his/her scores dropped a little.  This is true for students all across Arizona.  Scores in math dropped significantly in both math and ELA across the entire state.  This experience is not new and is a normal result whenever a new test is implemented that requires new standards and increased rigor.

Hualapai, as a whole, scored at or close to the state average on each test for each grade level.  In fact, Hualapai scored well above the state average in 5th grade math and had the highest scores in the district in 5th grade math and 3rd grade ELA.

Also enclosed with your child’s AzMerit scores is a flyer from Expect More Arizona that outlines some of the state standards for math and ELA, as well as suggestions for things that you can do at home to help prepare for this year’s AzMerit assessment.  If you have any questions regarding your child’s AzMerit scores, please contact his/her teacher.

Yours in Education,

Principal – Hualapai Elementary
